Wat kan subversiviteit zijn? Wat zou het moeten zijn? Bestaat het nog?
Hoe te ontsnappen aan het onvermijdelijke proces van romantisering en de nostalgische blik? Met die vragen in het achterhoofd wil organisator IDeA, het interdisciplinair onderzoeksplatform van het RITS, in dialoog gaan, de confrontatie opzoeken en, vooral, subversiviteit als activistische strategie op haar inzetbaarheid toetsen. Van 16 tot 19 december bezet IDeA (studenten, docenten, artiesten en invités) de Beursschouwburg om er in samenwerking met de Beursschouwburgploeg een SUB.FEST. aan te richten dat gaat van lezing/open les over atelier tot feest, tot de poging om een toekomst voor subversie te formuleren.
Algemeen bestaat SUB.FEST. uit drie grote onderdelen. Het eerste luik is de geschiedenis: wat leert ons de genealogie van de begrippen subversie en subversiviteit en wat verstaan we vandaag onder deze termen? Dit onderdeel moet het fundament vormen van het festival en de aanzet geven voor het verdere verloop. Eén historische beweging willen we extra belichten: het situationisme. Van hieruit komen we als vanzelf bij het tweede luik terecht, namelijk dat van de kritiek. Wat is kritiek? Binnen het gamma van wat kritiek kan zijn, besteden we ondermeer aandacht aan het begrip populisme. Met dit begrip willen we het debat open trekken.
Het derde en laatste luik zal bestaan uit statements of hope. Op welke manier is er nog ontwrichting mogelijk? Of slaagt het Systeem er in elke vorm van subversie onmiddellijk te incorporeren? Via verschillende werkgroepen en seminaries willen we komen tot enkele formuleringen over hedendaagse subversiviteit. En dit alles wordt afgesloten met een grote potlatch.
Binnen dit kader wordt er (subversief) gespeeld. Het programma is een work in progress. Het groeit, het verandert en het past zich aan.

De doelgroep van SUB.FEST. is hoofdzakelijk een relatief jong en geïnteresseerd publiek.
Zonder aan kwaliteit in te boeten moet de inhoud duidelijk over komen. Geen wetenschappelijk of moeilijk taalgebruik, wel een université populaire. Bedoeling is informatie, communicatie, interactie en dialoog. Alle lezingen worden in het Engels gevoerd, er zal simultaan vertaald worden naar het Nederlands.
Elke dag van het festival start om 10 uur. In de voormiddag is er ruimte voor informatie en debat waarbij we zoeken naar stemmen en tegenstemmen, in de namiddag en avond wordt dit getoetst aan de praktijk via film, performance en documentaire. Tussendoor stencilt het onregelmatige tijdschrift Stempel (www.stempelmagazine.be) op eigenzinnige manier een speciale festivaleditie.

What can subversivity be? What should it be? Is it still alive? How to escape from the inevitable process of romanticising and from the nostalgic viewpoint? With these questions in mind, IDeA (platform for interdisciplinary artistic research of the RITS) wants to elicit a dialogue, to provoke confrontation, and especially to prove the posssibility of subversivity as an activistic strategy.
From 16 till 19 December, IDeA (students, lecturers, artists and guests) occupy the Beursschouwburg in order to lay on a SUB.FEST. with the cooperation of the Beursschouwburg team – a festival which offers a broad variety of activities ranging from lectures to workshops to
feasts, and to the endeavour to formulate a future for subversion.
Generally, SUB.FEST. consists of three major parts. The first part is oriented towards history. What does the genealogy of notions of subversion and subversivity teach us and how are these notions understood today? This part should form the solid basis of the festival and give way to the further course of the festival. One historic movement will be focussed upon: Situationism. Hence we arrive at the second section: criticism.
What exactly is criticism? Within the range of what criticism can be, we will among other things, pay attention to the notion of populism. With this notion, we try to broaden the debate.
The third and last section will consist of statements of hope. In what way is disruption still possible? Or does the System succeed in incorporating each form of subversivity immediately? Via several study groups and seminars we aim to construct a few formulations about contemporary subversivity. Last but not least, this festival will be concluded with a big potlatch.
The festival in itself is playfully subversive. Its programme has to be seen as work in progress. It’s ever growing, evolving and being adapted.

The target audience of SUB.FEST. is for the main part a relatively young and interested one. Without loss of quality, the content should be easily intelligible. No scientific, difficult word use, but an université populaire instead. Information, communication, interaction and dialogue: that’s what we aim at!
Each day of the festival begins at 10 a.m. During the morning, there will be the opportunity to open up debates in which we are looking for voices and counter voices. In the afternoon and evening, the programme will offer some entertainment (film, performance, documentaries) in order to keep our heads cool.
